Supercharging Brain Mitochondria Reverses Memory Loss in Mice

Researchers have shown that boosting the brain’s energy-producing mitochondria can reverse memory and motor problems in mice with dementia-like symptoms. Using a tool called mitoDREADD-Gs, scientists proved for the first time that mitochondrial dysfunction is not just linked to but can directly cause neurodegeneration.

Why it’s exciting: Restoring mitochondrial activity reversed memory loss in animal models, suggesting that future drugs targeting these “cellular power stations” could open an entirely new path to treating Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.
